JLPT N5を満点で合格して、もうN4も半分くらいまで来た。まだ大したレベルじゃないのは分かってるけど、勉強時間以外の息抜き＆練習として、日本語でレトロゲームを遊んでみたいんだ。N5レベルの文法の人におすすめのゲームってある？新しい単語が出てくるのは構わない。ただ、辞書を引きっぱなしになるほど多いのは避けたい。あと、自分はN5試験の基礎しか知らないから、できればほぼ「かな」表示に設定できるゲームがいいな。

I passed the N5 with a perfect score, and I’m already halfway to N4. I know it’s not much yet, but I’d love to start playing some retro games in Japanese for fun and practice outside of study hours. What games would you recommend for someone with N5-level grammar? I don’t mind new vocabulary, as long as it’s not so much that I have to constantly check a dictionary. I’d prefer games that can be set mostly to kana, since I only know the basics from the N5 exam.

JLPT = 日本語能力試験。N5が一番やさしく、N1が最上級。

grats, what was your path to getting to that point? i can never fully motivate myself into a concrete disciplined strategy to learning japanese, it lasts for maybe a week or two then i trail off and stop.

知る限り、N5「だけ」で（というかN5「中心」ですら）遊べるゲームは無いと思う。かなり近いものはあるけどね。
レトロゲームは賛否が分かれる。かな表記オンリーか（学習者的にはこれは良くない、漢字を絶対に疎かにすべきじゃないから）、漢字がドット過ぎて初心者には読めないかの、どっちかになりがちなんだ。とはいえ、かなオンリーもそこまで悪い選択じゃないよ。
個人的には古い世代のポケモンをすすめる。たまに調べ物をするのが苦じゃなければ、語彙はそこまで難しくない。漢字の練習にはちょっと物足りないけどね。第4世代以降ならドットフォントじゃなくなるから良い。
ゲーム全般の話なら、YouTubeに “game gengo” って人がいて、学習者にとってそのゲームがどれくらい取り組みやすいかをレビューしてる。上位の常連は3DSの「12才」シリーズ、ファミコン探偵倶楽部、妖怪ウォッチあたり。ランキング動画の概要欄に本人のGoogleスプレッドシートが貼ってあるよ。

afaik there is nothing that uses only (or even mostly) N5. Some stuff can get pretty close, though.

Retro games are contentious because they either stick to kana only (which is bad if you’re learning, because you absolutely should NOT neglect kanji) or the kanji are so pixelated it’s actually unreadable for a n00b. Sticking to kana only isn’t too bad an option though.

imo play some old Pokémon, the vocab isn’t too hard if you don’t mind looking things up from time to time. Could really use some kanji, though. Gen 4 onward is great because the text no longer requires a pixel font

if you care about just games in general, there’s this guy on youtube – game gengo – that pretty much does game reviews of how accessible a game is for a learner. Some of the top picks are the 12-sai series for 3DS, Famicom Detective Club and Yokai Watch. You can find his google spreadsheet in the description of most of his ranking videos

だいたい2〜3千語くらい覚えると、「知らない単語の壁」じゃない文がだんだん見えてくる。とはいえ、その段階でもまだ辞書は引きっぱなしになるけどな。

Once you’ve learned around 2~3k words, you start to see sentences that aren’t just a wall of new vocabulary. And even then, you’ll still be pulling out a dictionary non-stop.

数千語規模の「語彙の脳内ライブラリ」を作る必要がある。じゃないとどこにも進めない。core6kやWaniKaniみたいなSRS（間隔反復）を使え。思ってるよりずっと簡単で、要は毎日やるだけだ。俺もフルタイムで働いてるけど、1日30分で十分こなせてるよ。

you NEED to build a mental library of few thousand vocab words or else you’re not getting anywhere
use srs like core6k or wanikani, it’s way easier than you think you just gotta do it every day
i work full time and its totally manageable just 30 minutes a day

SRS = 間隔反復で覚える学習法。core6k・WaniKani はその代表的な教材・アプリ。

（さっき「金の無駄」と言った件だけど）そう言うのは、N2より前のレベルで受験するのは無意味だからだ。日本の永住権のポイント制度も、評価対象になるのはN2以上だけ。ちゃんと理由があるんだよ。

I say its a waste of money because testing before N2 is pointless. Theres a reason why the Japanese permanent residency point system only considers N2 and above notable.

N2 = JLPTの上から2番目のレベル。日本の高度人材ポイント制度で加点対象になる。

Keep at it. At N3 and 10k words vocab and you’ll only have to open up a dictionary every other sentence.
